Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo lets a T-Rex have its watering hole

A friendly prehistoric zoo where you breed dinosaurs, kit out enclosures with the right toys and keep a stream of visitors fed. Familiar underneath, delightful on top.

Somewhere inside most adults is a child who could name every dinosaur in the picture book. Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo is made for that child. It takes the familiar upjers zoo formula, enclosures, feeding, cleaning, visitors, and swaps the pandas for triceratops and velociraptors. The result is cheerful, a little silly and surprisingly hard to put down.

It is also the most focused of the three zoo games on our shelf. Where My Free Zoo sprawls and Zoo 2 bustles, Dinosaur Park keeps things manageable. That makes it a good first zoo for players who find the bigger games intimidating, and a pleasant change of scene for anyone who already runs one.

Stone pits, play trees and very particular tastes

Each species has its own needs, and that is where the charm lives. The official page gives examples: a triceratops wants a stone and sand pit, a velociraptor its wooden play tree, a T-Rex a watering hole. Getting these details right feels like caring for real personalities rather than ticking boxes, and it gives each enclosure its own character.

Day to day, you keep the dinosaurs supplied with food and water, get them playing and make sure the enclosures stay clean. It is the same gentle routine as the other zoos, but the prehistoric skin makes even mucking out a little more entertaining. There is something irresistible about tidying up after an animal the size of a bus.

Eggs, hatchlings and a growing roster

Breeding is the emotional centre. You can breed dinosaurs from all eras, and baby dinosaurs are, as the game knows very well, an instant draw for visitors. Watching a clutch become a small herd in an enclosure you designed is genuinely satisfying, and it gives you a reason to keep an eye on each species rather than just the newest arrival.

New prehistoric animals unlock as you climb through the levels, so the park widens at a steady, readable pace. You always know what you are working towards. It lacks the bottomless roster of My Free Zoo, which is exactly why it suits shorter attention spans: the next goal is always in sight.

Snack shacks, souvenirs and hired help

Visitors arrive to gawp at your dinosaurs, and they need looking after too. You can set up snack shacks and souvenir shops, which feed the income that buys your next species. Hiring employees helps with the day-to-day business, so as the park grows you spend less time clicking troughs and more time planning.

Decoration is generous. You can create desert, forest and tropical landscapes and arrange your park to your own designs, and the bright art makes even a modest layout look cheerful. Interestingly, the official page notes the game was co-funded by the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, a detail we enjoyed for its sheer unexpectedness.

Smaller footprint, familiar compromises

Its limits are those of the formula. If you have played another upjers zoo, the bones will feel very familiar, and the novelty rests heavily on how much you love dinosaurs. Optional purchases speed things along as usual, and the pull grows stronger in the later levels when new species take longer to reach.

Still, the compactness works in its favour for a cosy shelf. It is easy to keep on top of, easy to understand and rarely overwhelming. For families especially, a park of baby dinosaurs is a lovely thing to build together, with plenty to talk about and nothing frightening in sight.

Settling into Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo

  1. Learn each species’ play equipment early; matching toys to dinosaurs keeps enclosures content and visitors interested.
  2. Keep food, water and cleaning on a short daily round so nothing slips while you build.
  3. Open a snack shack near the entrance as soon as you can to steady your income.
  4. Breed your first species once its enclosure is comfortable, since hatchlings draw visitors quickly.
  5. Choose one landscape style, desert, forest or tropical, and decorate a single area properly.

What we love

  • Species-specific toys like the T-Rex watering hole give each enclosure personality.
  • Baby dinosaurs make breeding a genuinely cheering moment.
  • A compact scope keeps the park manageable for newcomers.
  • Bright, friendly art suits families and grown-up dinosaur fans alike.

What grates

  • Underneath, it closely mirrors the other upjers zoo games.
  • The roster feels small next to My Free Zoo’s enormous collection.
  • Later levels lean harder on patience or the shop.

Who Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo will delight

Dinosaur lovers of every age, and anyone who wants a zoo game that stays manageable. It is ideal for a family project on wet weekends and a cheerful daily habit for adults who still slow down at the fossil section of a museum.

Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo, all told

Dinosaur Park: Primeval Zoo does not reinvent the zoo game, but it dresses it in the most delightful costume imaginable. Particular tastes, adorable hatchlings and a compact, readable park make it easy to love. If dinosaurs make you smile, move it up your list; if not, the bigger zoos offer more to do.
